VIRGINA

  • Virginia was the first colony in the world
  • Virginia is where the British Empire began

FOUNDER

  • The founder of Virginia was John Smith
  • It was founded in 1607

Virginia was founded because King James I wanted to establish a colony in the new world. They formed the Virginia Company and set out into the New World

Half of the people who settled here were wealthy gentlemen, personal servants, and they were only a few farmers, artisans, and hunters.

CLIMATE

  • Colonists experienced very hot and humid summers and mild winters
  • There was plentiful rain which was great for farming

GEOGRAPHY

  • There were lots of bays where ports could be made for trade
  • There were also many mountains and heavy woods

Early Virginia depended on crops such as corn and potatoes. Tobacco and cotton were the leading exports, as well as slaves.

RELIGION

  • In early Virginia, people went to Anglican Churches
  • Virginia colonists also believed in Jesus Christ and worshipped Him

The colony of Virginia started as a joint-stock company which was financed by individual investors. After that, King James I granted a charter to the Virginia Company.
