What is vitamin D?

The Vitamin D Council

What is vitamin D?

https://www.vitamindcouncil.org/about-vitamin-d/what-is-vitamin-d/

Vitamin D is actually a hormone rather than a vitamin.

The body makes most of the vitamin D it needs; only about 10% comes from our food. The action of sunlight on our skin produces a substance called cholecalciferol, which is converted by the liver to calcidiol. This is further converted in the kidneys by the enzyme 1α-hydroxylase to calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D. Calcidiol is considered a good indicator of vitamin D levels and is the form that is usually measured by doctors.

This is the Primary Role of Vitamin D in the Body

Vitamin D is actually produced into a hormone

Vitamin D is actually produced into a hormone in our bodies and regulates hundreds of processes in the body, and is WAY MORE important to almost every single aspect of your health than most people realize.

There is even evidence that due to the regulation of so many hormonal processes in our bodies that can be affected by Vitamin D, producing enough Vitamin D in your body can even help with fat loss, muscle building, blood sugar control, and hundreds of other factors.

Dr. Joseph Mercola

There's little risk of toxicity even at higher blood levels. In fact, research3 shows you have to get well above 200 ng/ml before there's any risk of toxicity, and the risk even then is low. There is no risk of toxicity below 200 ng/ml.

So 200 ng/ml is the threshold for toxicity, and 40 ng/ml is the lower threshold for therapeutic activity, and the threshold thought to protect the health of the general population. That said, if you're using vitamin D as a pharmacologic treatment under the guidance of a physician for a medical disorder, you can go far higher.

I typically recommend a level between 50-70 ng/ml for optimal health and general disease prevention, and 70-100 ng/ml as an adjunct to the treatment of heart disease and cancer. According to Dr. Heaney, "the sky is the limit there; so long as he or she knows what he or she is doing, there will be no problem."

Factors affecting vitamin D production from sunlight

If your shadow is longer than you are tall, you are not making much vitamin D

There are many factors that influence how much vitamin D is produced in response to UVB exposure 2, the most well-known factor being the angle of the Sun’s rays.

Time of day, season, and latitude all determine the amount of UVB that reaches your skin. When the Sun's rays enter the Earth's atmosphere at too much of an angle, the atmosphere diffuses (blocks) the UVB portion of the rays.

This occurs during the early and latter parts of the day, during the winter season (what is called “Vitamin D Winter”), and increases as one moves further away from the equator. A good rule of thumb is: If your shadow is longer than you are tall (an indicator of the oblique angle of the Sun), you are not making much vitamin D.

Time of day
For vitamin D production, sun exposure should be midday between the hours of approximately 10am-2pm. These hours will vary slightly according to latitude. The closer to solar noon, the more vitamin D produced. 3

Safe sun exposure is essential for optimal health, but incorrect exposure can raise your risk of skin cancer while not providing any health benefits. Sunburn should be avoided at all cost. Detailed guidelines are provided for safely increasing your vitamin D stores through proper sun exposure are included

An SPF as low as 8 can block almost 100% of vitamin D production. SPF 30, as pictured here, will block 100%

There are other factors which affect the amount of vitamin D produced in response to UVB.

They are:
•Amount of skin exposed – at least 40% of the entire skin surface should be exposed for optimal vitamin D production. The torso produces the most, legs and arms some, hands and face very little or none at all. 8

•Age – vitamin D synthesis can take up to 4 times as long for those over the age of 60 and under the age of 20, apparently due to having less7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin.

•Sunscreen – an SPF as low as 8 can block as much as 95% of vitamin D production.

•Altitude – more UVB is filtered out of the atmosphere at the beach as opposed to a mountain top.

•Cloud cover – water droplets in the air scatter some UVB back into space.

•Air pollution -- particles in the air (such as ozone, haze, and sulfur dioxide) can either absorb UVB or reflect it back into space.

•Being behind glass – glass blocks all UVB.

Anemia

For vitamin D production, dark-skinned individuals will need up to six times longer in the sun than those with light skin

Anemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough red blood cells to carry sufficient oxygen to their tissues.

A recent study found that African Americans who were considered vitamin D deficient had 6.42 times the odds of having anemia compared to vitamin D sufficient African Americans.

The Primary Existence Of Vitamin D In Our Bodies Is To Maintain Normal Blood Levels Of Calcium And Phosphorus.

Without vitamin D - and calcium - bones can become thin, brittle, soft, or misshapen thus causing a huge impact on one's health. Research also suggests that vitamin D may help maintain a healthy immune system and help regulate cell growth and differentiation while the hormone, calcitriol, in vitamin D has been found to have anti-cancer properties.

Vitamin D Deficiency Common in Patients With Chronic Migraine

New research showing that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with chronic migraine suggests that this patient group, like other vitamin D-deficient populations, is at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, malignancy, and other serious illnesses that have been linked to low levels of this "good-health" vitamin.

Investigators presented the results of an observational study here at the 50th Annual Meeting of the American Headache Society, which showed that 41.8% of patients with chronic migraine were deficient in 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The study also showed that the longer individuals had chronic migraine, the more likely they were to be vitamin D deficient.
