MATTER

  • Anything that takes up space and has mass.
  • All matter is made up of atoms.

ATOM

  • The smallest unit of a chemical element

ELEMENT

  • Each element is made of only one type of atom
  • There’s are about 120 elements
  • Ex: Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, gold, etc.

PERIODIC TABLE

  • A list of every single discovered element in the universe.
  • Categorizes, and organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms.

MOLECULE

  • Created when 2 or more atoms join together.
  • They can be two different atoms or two of the same atoms.

COMPOUND

  • Created when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms join together.
  • All compounds are also atoms, but not all atoms are compounds.

SUBSCRIPTS

  • They tell you how many atoms of each element in that molecule.
  • Ex: H2= 2 hydrogen molecules.
  • Ex: H2O= 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen.

COEFFICIENTS

  • They multiply the number of molecules you are making.
  • 2 H2 O= 4 hydrogen atoms, 2 oxygen atoms.
