Ration
- a fixed amount of a commodity officially allowed to each person during a time of shortage, as in wartime.
Sentence- Tea made from it is strong and of very good flavor so the wartime ration went a long way.

War bonds
- War bonds are debt securities issued by a government to finance military operations and other expenditure in times of war. The bonds also remove money from circulation and thus also help to control inflation.
Sentence- You could purchase a $25 War Bond for $18.75.

Depression
- severe despondency and dejection, typically felt over a period of time and accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy.
Sentence- Mothers with postnatal depression are in just such a position.

Victory gardens
- a vegetable garden, esp. a home garden, planted to increase food production during a war.
Sentence- my mother used to help make victory gardens because they guys were running out of food.

Stock market
- a stock exchange.
Sentence- Today's stock market has become a world of automated transactions executed at lightning speed.

Rural
- in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the town.
Sentence- Rural with few major towns except Barnstaple, Great Torrington, Bideford and Ilfracombe.

Boom and bust
- A process of economic expansion and contraction that occurs repeatedly. The boom and bust cycle is a key characteristic of today's capitalist economies. During the boom the economy grows, jobs are plentiful and the market brings high returns to investors.

Desegregate
- the elimination of laws, customs, or practices under which different races, groups, etc., are restricted to specific or separate public facilities, neighborhoods, schools, organizations, or the like.
Sentence- Desegregateion of desegregating the busses wasn't over until late 1959.
