VOCABULARY

ADAGE- NOUN

  • An old saying
  • I often find the adage "out of sight, out of mind" to be true.

BONANZA-NOUN

  • Something(event) that makes a lot of something good
  • In the game Wii Party, during bank bonanza, a player wins all the money in the bank.

CHURLISH- ADJECTIVE

  • Mean, rude
  • The person was very churlish when they harshly insulted their sibling.

CITADEL- NOUN

  • Protective fortress
  • The citadel was positioned by the wall, ready to protect the city from intruders.

COLLABORATE- VERB

  • To work together
  • Lots of YouTubers collaborate on videos, so they film, write, and star in the video together.

DECREE- NOUN

  • Official command
  • The king made a decree that banned strangers from entering the kingdom.

DISCORDANT- ADJECTIVE

  • Conflicting, disagreeing
  • The selfish person is discordant of sharing anything, and will agree until they get their way.

EVOLVE- VERB

  • Change over time
  • After studying lots of different characteristics of animals, scientists believe many animals evolved through random mutations.

EXCERPT- NOUN OR VERB

  • (To take) A small piece taken from something, usually like a quote.
  • For our assignment, we had to analyze an important excerpt from a speech and guess which speech it was from.

GROPE- VERB

  • Feel around uncertainly
  • She groped around the walls of the dark room, looking for the light switch.

HOVER- VERB OR NOUN

  • To float above ground in one spot; act of floating in one place
  • The fog hovered over the ground, floating and unmoving.

JOSTLE- VERB OR NOUN

  • To move aggressively through a crowd; the act of moving...
  • You could see the person jostling through the crowd, pushing and shoving their way to the front.

LAGGARD- NOUN OR ADJECTIVE

  • Someone slower than others; slow
  • The laggard was several feet behind the other hikers.

PLAUDITS- NOUN

  • Applause, praise, cheers
  • The plaudits after the performance made the performer happy.

PRECLUDE- VERB

  • To stop, to prevent
  • The hailstorm precluded the people from going outside.

REVERT- VERB

  • To return to a form from before
  • In Call of the Wild, Buck reverted back to his primitive self, and started acting like a wild wolf.

RUBBLE- NOUN

  • Broken, crumpled remains, usually from a building
  • After the buildings collapsed, there were people searching through the rubble for survivors.

SERVILE- ADJECTIVE

  • Willing to serve
  • After being tortured many times, the dragon was when its owners came.

VIGIL- NOUN

  • A time of keeping watch whole staying awake, sometimes silent
  • In the Warriors series,when the cats become warriors, they have to keep vigil outside the camp all night without speaking.

WRANGLE- NOUN

  • Long argument
  • A wrangle between the government and the sanitation workers over a contract caused the sanitation workers to stop working and go on strike.
