WHAT IS VOLCANISM?

  • Volcanism is the activity of a volcano
  • A volcano is like a hill with a crater
  • Inside the crater lava or hot rock fills up and pours out of it

HOW VOLCANOS ARE FORMED

  • Formed when magma works its way to the surface
  • After a load fills up it erupts and forms a lava flow
  • Over time lava continues to flow out, and get bigger

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF VOLCANOES?

  • Scientists have classified volcanoes into three categories
  • They are: active, dormant, and extinct

ACTIVE VOLCANOES

  • An active volcano is a volcano that has recently erupted
  • Also, it is most likely to erupt again sometime soon

DORMANT VOLCANOES

  • These volcanoes are slightly different than active ones
  • These volcanoes have not erupted in a long time
  • But they might have a chance of erupting again

EXTINCT VOLCANOES

  • Extinct volcanoes are nothing like active or dormant volcaoes
  • These volcanoes erupted thousands of years ago, and have no chance of erupting again

WHY DO VOLCANOES ERUPT?

  • The Earth is made up of huge slabs called plates
  • They fit together like a jigsaw puzzle
  • These plates sometimes move around a bit
  • The friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruption
  • The theory that explains this process is called plate tectonics

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF VOLCANOES?

  • Volcanoes are grouped into four types
  • They are: Cinder Cone, Composite Volcanoes, Shield Volcanoes, Lava Volcanoes

CINDER CONE

  • Are circular or oval shaped
  • Made up of samll fragments of lava
  • From a single vent
  • Cooled and fallen around the vent

COMPOSITE VOLCANOES

  • Are steep volcanoes
  • Composed out of many layer of volcanic rock
  • Made from lava, ash, and rock
  • Mt. Rainier an example of this type of volcano

SHIELD VOLCANOES

  • Shaped like bowl or shield in the middle
  • Has long gentle slopes made by basaltic lava flows
  • The volcanoes that formed near the Columbian Plateau are shield volcanoes

LAVA VOLCANOES

  • Lava domes are formed when erupting lava gets to thick to flow
  • Makes a steep-sided mound as lava piles up near the vent

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGMA AND LAVA?

THERE ARE LINES ON YOUR PAPER! THINK CAREFULLY!!!

The answer is:

Magma is a liquid rock inside of a volcano.

Lava is liquid rock that flows out of a
volcano.

BONUS: WHERE WAS THE VOLCANO THAT ERUPTED ON SUNDAY?
PUT IT ON THE BOTTOM OF YOUR PAPER, THEN RAISE YOUR HAND TO ANSWER THE QUESTION PERSON WHO GETS IT RIGHT GETS FIRST PICK AT CAKE AND GET TO PICK THE NEXT TWO PEOPLE THAT GET IT
