CAUSES OF VOLCANOES

  • Formed when magma from within the Earth's upper mantle works its way to the surface.
  • At the surface, it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits.
  • Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.

MAGMA VS. LAVA

  • Magma is composed of molten rock and is stored in the Earth's crust
  • Lava is magma that reaches the surface of our planet through a volcano vent.

ACTIVE VS. EXTINCT

  • An active volcano is a volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000
  • An extinct volcano has not had an eruption for at least 10,000 years and is not expected to erupt again in a comparable time scale of the future.

EVVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS

  • influence bird migration, roosting, flying ability, and feeding activity
  • Plants are destroyed over a wide area, during an eruption
  • Livestock and other mammals have been killed by lava flows,
