PRESENTATION OUTLINE

VOLCANOES

KILAUEA VOLCANO, HAWAII

  • Kīlauea is a shield volcano in the Hawaiian Islands
  • the most active of the five volcanoes that together form the island of Hawaiʻi

MT. VESUVIUS, ITALY

  • Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples
  • It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc.

PLATE TECHTONICS

  • A volcano is an opening in the earth's crust that allows molten rock from the mantle to flow out onto the surface as lava.
  • Most volcanoes are formed by the movement of tectonic plates
  • These plates are basically huge pieces of rock that ‘float’ on the mantle
  • The tectonic plates are in constant motion, albeit very slow motion.

MAGMA AND LAVA

  • Magma is under the ground
  • Lava is already erupted

ACTIVE VOLCANOES

THE VOLCANOES HAVE TO HAVE ERUPTED IN THE PAST 10,000 YEARS

EXTINCT VOLCANOES

EXTINCT VOLCANOES HAVE TO HAVE NOT ERUPTED IN OVER 10,000 YEARS

ENVIROMENTAL EFFECT

  • tiny liquid droplets of sulfuric acid erupted into the stratosphere can change our planet's climate temporarily.
  • A serious environmental effect of volcanoes is burial by ash, mud, or lava.
  • During heavy ash-rains houses and buildings may collapse.
