2.
MAJOR VOLCANO FOUND IN U.S.
A major volcano in the United States is Mount Cleveland
It is located in Chuginadok Island, Alaska
3.
MOUNT CLEVELAND
Mt. Cleveland is 5,676 ft high and one of the most active
Of the 75 or more volcanoes in the larger Aleutians Arc.
It has erupted at least 22 times in the last 230 years.
Most recently, 3 times in 2009, twice in 2010, and once in 2011
Very, very recent was January of this year.
4.
MAJOR VOLCANO IN THE WORLD
The largest discovered is beneath the Pacific Ocean.
It covers the area size of New Mexico. It's called Tamu Massif.
It is considered the largest volcano in the world, it is roughly 1,000 miles
Off the eastern coast of japan.
5.
CAUSES OF VOLCANOES
The earths crust is the thinnest layer. It is broken up into large
Pieces called tectonic plates. These plates lie Above the hot, liquid mantle.
Each plate contains some continental crust and some oceanic crust. Huge
Currents of molten rock circulate deep in the mantle, causing the plates to
Move about very slowly on the earths crust.
6.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGMA AND LAVA
Magma refers to molten rock which is still underground in vents.
Lava refers to molten rock which has found it way to the ground after
The eruption and is flowing.
7.
ACTIVE VS. EXTINCT
An active volcano has at least one eruption during the past 10,00 years.
An active volcano might be erupting or dormant.
An extinct volcano has not had an eruption for at least 10,000 years and is
Not expected to erupt again in the future.
8.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Everything gets buried by he ash, mud, or lava, and destroys everything
In its path. DangerousGases can be emitted from the eruption. Gas clouds contain sulfur
Dioxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrogen fluoride.
9.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS
When lava enters oceans, a chemical reaction occurs called "laze".
They are formed by white plume clouds that are made from the chemical
Reaction. It causes irritation to the throat, lungs, eyes, and nose.
