NOVARUPTA, ALASKA

  • The June 1912 eruption of Novarupta was the largest of the 20th century.
  • Novarupta is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.
  • The eruption sent 3 cubic miles of magma and volcanic ash into the air.
  • It fell to cover an area of 3,000 sq miles in ash more than a foot deep.
  • The Katmai caldera was formed by the eruption.

EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL, ICELAND

  • "Island mountain glacier", it is one of the smaller ice caps of Iceland.
  • The eruption sent lava 100m into the air and tore a 1km-long fissure in the ice.
  • Icelandic airspace was closed, along with 20 European countries.
  • Before 2010, the last eruption was in 1821.

VOLCANIC AIR POLLUTION AND EFFECTS

  • Sulfurous volcanic emissions are called vog.
  • Vog and other gases from volcanoes can cause acid rainfall.
