  • Located in Ecuador
  • About 60 kilometers south of Quito
  • Can be clearly seen from the city of Quito

INFORMATION

  • Considered to be the world's tallest active volcano
  • Has a height of 5,897 meters
  • 2 times higher than Mount St. Helens in Washington state
  • 86 known eruptions
  • First eruption in 1534, most recent eruption was in 1940 or 1942 (42 was not a confirmed eruption)

  • Most eruptions were of mud, lava, and/or ash
  • When the ice/snow at the top began to melt, it was a sign that it could possibly erupt
  • Name means "Smooth Neck of the Moon"- was an honored "Sacred Mountain" to the local Andean people
