All About Voltaire

  • Voltaire was born as Francois- Marie Arouret on November 21, 1694
  • He was born and raised in Paris, France which is where he spent most of his adult life.
  • Voltaire passed away on May 30, 1778 (age 83) also in Paris, France.
  • He was often influenced by John Locke.

SIGNIFICANCE of Voltaire's Life

  • Voltaire was a working Librettist, Poet, Playwright, and Philospher
  • He attended The University of Paris where he obtained a degree in theology.
  • Voltaire became an Enlightenment thinker after being inspired by other thinkers born in this time period.

Voltaire mainly believed in Freedom of speech which this symbol represents.

Voltaire's Thoughts and Beliefs

  • A major belief of Voltaire was Freedom of Speech. This basically meant that you should be allowed to say whatever you wanted without being punished.
  • Another main belief of Voltaire was Freedom of Religion. This meant that people could believe in or practice any religion that they wanted without being punished or forced to believe in something different.

  • Last but not least, Voltaire believed in separation of church and state. This meant that the church shouldn't be able to be the government, shouldn't enforce laws, or should force people to attend church

Voltaire's Impact on Modern Government

  • Many of Voltaire's ideas impacted modern government such as Freedom of speech. Today we can protest or say what we want without be harshly punished.
  • We also can practice any religion we want without people shunning us or punishing us. (Freedom of Religion).

  • The Church also isn't the government anymore so they cant make laws, and we are not forced to got to church. (Separation of church and state.)

  • Voltaire was an excellent writer.
  • A few of his books are Candide, Zadig, Letters on the English, and the age of Louis XIV.
  • He was also well known for his quotes such as "I disapprove of what you say, but i will defend to the death your right to say it" and "Common sense is not so common"
