FRIEDRICH VON STEUBEN

LIFE BEFORE AMERICA

• His full name is Friedrich Wilhelm Von Steuben
• At age 17 he was in the Prussia army.
• For unknown reasons Von Steuben was discharged.
• He traveled to America in February 1778.
• Von Steuben began to help whip the army into shape.

AT VALLEY FORGE

• Von Steuben couldn't speak English so he wrote his drills down in French,
• And had Alexander Hamilton translate into English. His drills were used until 1812
• Von Steuben made the Army practice drills, and discipline.
• He also put the kitchen and "out house" on opposite ends so the camp could
• be some what sanitary.

LATER IN HIS LIFE

• Von Steuben was named the camp's inspector general
• He died November 28, 1794
