This is Tomey Homma. He helped found a hospital, school, and a newspaper. He took the government to court to get to vote, but he lost. Sadly, he died in a government prison camp in 1945. He was in prison for being Japanese.
This is Tommy Longboat or Cogwagee. He was once the fastest man in the world. He won the Boston Marathon and was declared the champion of the world in running. He lived on the Six Nations Reserve and was barred from voting.
Nellie McClung lived in Manitou Manitoba. She protested for women to get the vote. This was finally achieved in 1916. Manitoba was the first province to allow women to vote.
Tim Buck was sent to prison for being a communist in 1932. Prison guards fired shots into his cell just to scare him. He was later released when the government realised it was unjust to hold him for his political views. The Communist party was banned in Canada during World War Two.
This is Bedouin Ferran also known as Peter Baker. He was born in Lebanon. He worked in Canada's north as a fur trader. He was one of the earliest Muslim politicians in Canada. When he arrived in Canada in 1910, Muslims were barred from voting in British Columbia.
