VOTING RIGHTS

  • It first went into effect on August 6,1965
  • Signed by president Johnson

CHANGES

  • They helped secure the right s and to make sure the voting right was fair
  • The supreme court struck the voting right act in 1965 by 5 to 4 freeing nine states
  • They got more violence during the time they passed the law

1800S

  • 1867: Civil Rights Act of 1866 granted ONLY citizenship to native-born Americans
  • 1869: 15th Amendment passed by Congress to allow African American male votes
  • 1896: Louisiana passed "grandfather clauses" that decreased black voters' votes

1900S

  • 1940: 3% of eligible African Americans in the South were registered to vote
  • 1964: 24th Amendment outlawed poll taxes
  • 1965: Law enforcement attacked more than 500 peaceful protesters marching to Montgomery.
  • 1965: President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
  • This ensured the right to vote, with no denial by race or by color.
