WALDEN
- “Our life is frittered away by detail...Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity...let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail.”
“Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail.”
Thoreau explains how our lives are being controlled by many things and events, in which they are crippling and destroying what is left in our lives, such as our happiness and sanity. It is best to keep everything simple and organized, whether it’s the case for going to work or for doing daily tasks. We must not complicate what we normally do, and instead, make it easier on ourselves.
