WALDEN

BALLESTEROS, PERIOD 7

WALDEN

  • “Our life is frittered away by detail...Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity...let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail.”
“Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity! I say, let your affairs be as two or three, and not a hundred or a thousand; instead of a million count half a dozen, and keep your accounts on your thumbnail.”

Thoreau explains how our lives are being controlled by many things and events, in which they are crippling and destroying what is left in our lives, such as our happiness and sanity. It is best to keep everything simple and organized, whether it’s the case for going to work or for doing daily tasks. We must not complicate what we normally do, and instead, make it easier on ourselves.

  • “Why should I feel lonely? Is not our planet in the Milky Way? This which you put seems to me not to be the most important question.”
Thoreau explains how solidarity is non-existent; how we are never alone. While casting yourself away from society might give others the impression that you are an introvert, you are, in fact, connecting with your surroundings. Mother Nature provides man with her gracious creatures, whom are all welcome to interact with you.

  • “...there a perennial waveless serenity reigns as in the amber twilight sky, corresponding to the cool and even temperament of the inhabitants. Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads...”
Thoreau explains how God’s kingdom can be seen in the hidden beauty of nature. The night sky and the cool, calm winds create an environment in which it can provide a glimpse of what Heaven is like: peaceful. In addition, the animals that live within nature reveal the abundance of God’s work that exists in the world.

  • “The change from storm and winter to serene and mild weather, from dark and sluggish hours to bright and elastic ones, is a memorable crisis which all things proclaim.”
Thoreau implies that greatness takes time to blossom, in which all of happiness will come out to “play.” In tough times, it will take great determination to succeed in what you believe in and may cause you to stumble on that path. With patience, all of what you believe in will come true, spurring a state of happiness in you.

WALDEN

  • “If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
“I learned this, at least, by my experiment; that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him...”

Thoreau explains how success can arrive when you at least expect it. When you pursue the goal that you have always been eager to complete, with great confidence and fearlessness, it will be certain that you will reach it. By doing so, one can be able to overcome their fears and see a new level of happiness and freedom.
