Psalm 131

My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me.

My heart is not proud, Lord,
my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
or things too wonderful for me.
2 But I have calmed and quieted myself,
I am like a weaned child with its mother;
like a weaned child I am content.
3 Israel, put your hope in the Lord
both now and forevermore.

But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord both now and forevermore.

Toddler

Psalm 131. Has the poet watched a mother soothe a fretful toddler, envying its contentment? Putting aside pride, curbing ambition, restraining curiosity, and not letting one’s heart be troubled, are his recipe for inner serenity, such as individuals and the nation long for.

White, R. E. O. (1995). Psalms. In Evangelical Commentary on the Bible (Vol. 3, p. 395). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House.

God, I’m not trying to rule the roost, I don’t want to be king of the mountain. I haven’t meddled where I have no business or fantasized grandiose plans. I’ve kept my feet on the ground, I’ve cultivated a quiet heart. Like a baby content in its mother’s arms, my soul is a baby content. Wait, Israel, for God. Wait with hope. Hope now; hope always!

Walk in Humility

Psalm 131:1
Pride - exalted view of oneself

Proverbs 16:5

5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart.   Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

James 4:6
6But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Pride - exalted view of oneself

Haughty - a word emphasizing rank

Envy – looking above with envy for a greater position

Superiority – looking down with disdain for those he thinks he is above

(Illus. As one Bible teacher put it……….What the heart desires the eyes go looking for …….)

Dissatisfaction – concerned with (going after)
My “pay grade” – wanting to function above my pay grade
My abilities – wanting to do what I am simply unable to do

John Calvin's thoughts here...

His submission in such matters stands contrasted with the presumption of those who, without any call from God, hurry themselves into unwarrantable undertakings, and involve themselves in duties which properly belong to others; for so long as we have a clear call from God things cannot be said to be shut up or hidden from us, or too great for us, provided we stand ready for all obedience; and, on the other hand, those who yield themselves up to the influence of ambition will soon lose themselves in a labyrinth of perplexity. We see how God confounds the proud and boasted enterprises of the children of this world

Look Deep - pride starts from deep within the heart

My soul/heart – the seat of our emotions, desires, or thoughts

Walk with God

Psalm 131:2
Keep growing

You can see the contrasting difference

Learned to calm and quiet himself....

Growth has occurred
Some time has elapsed

Stop scrambling
“Fussing and fretting”

Prov. 17:14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam;        so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

Be still

Focus on inactivity
Cease! Stop

Be quiet

Prov 17 continues....

27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.

28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,        and discerning if he holds his tongue.

Walk in Faith

Psalm 131:3
Hear the warm call
Personally
Nationally

PUT your hope in the right place

NOT....

In yourself
In money
In political systems

BUT In the Lord

Start today - Now

Cultivate lifestyle of trusting HIM

Practice Trusting God

(Illus. Charles Spurgeon comments that this is one of the shortest Psalms to read and one of the longest to learn....

Lord, today I want to ask your forgiveness for putting my trust in the wrong places. I ask for your grace as I seek to learn more about how to be quiet in your presence. And grant me the strength to develop the habits that will help me trust you for the rest of my life .....starting now.
In Jesus’ name….Amen
