Chicano Walkouts

Conditions

  • Chicano students didn't learn English, so many failed their classes, which were taught in English.
  • The school buildings, facilities, and quality of education were much worse for Mexican American students.

actions

  • The students threatened the government to do a walkout if their demands weren't met.
  • 10,000 students walked out of 5 high schools across L.A.

Obstacles

  • The police entered the town and arrested 13 teenagers.
  • The bail for the teenagers was very high, $10,000, and angered the community.

Achievements

  • Some demands were met; more Hispanic teachers were hired, and there were more academic programs.
  • The walkouts helped attract more attention on bad education that the Chicanos had.
