Stephen Crane

  • Born on November 1,1871  
  • Crane began writing at the age of 4
  • Crane had several articles by the age of 16
  • Crane wrote "The Open Boat" describing his shipwreck ordeal
  • Crane died at age 28 of tuberculosus

Reptition

  • Crane repeats "Do not weep"  
  • By repeating this he makes a point you should cry 
  • Crane repeats "War is kind"
  • This emphasizes that Crane thinks war is in fact NOT kind
  • "These men were born to drill and die"(Line 8)

Imagery

  • Images of a father dying in battle but he is dying with honor.
  • "Because your father tumbles in the yellow trenches" (Lines 13).
  • They know their whole life for is war an they may not make it out.

  • They were trained to push hard until that last breath.

Irony

  • "Do not weep,maiden,for War is Kind "(Line 1)
  • Crane says to this to emphasize that was is not kind.
  • Emphasizes the fact that most people do cry.

  • Tone of death.
  • He talks of all the corpses that lied died
  • He talks of the father died in rage of battle
  • "These men were born to drill and die"
