WASHINGTON IRVING WAS BORN April 3, 1783

In New York

His parents were William and Sarah Irving

HE was the youngest of eleven kids

Washington Irving started his writing career at 19

WITH BOOKS LIKE SALMAGUNDI

Soon after he wrote his book The History of New York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty. (1809)

He was shocked BY THE DEATH OF HIS FIANCÉE Matilda Hoffman

After Hoffman's death, he focused solely on his work

BUT WAS AGAIN SHAKEN BY THE DEATH IF HIS FATHER in 1810

Irving's brothers sent him to Liverpool in 1815 to work on the import/export firm located there

ALTHOUGH HIS MOTHER PASSED AWAY WHILE HE WAS THERE, HE STILL CHOSE TO STAY

WHILE Irving was in Europe, he became interested in German Literature and Romantic History.

It was here that he published The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent in 1819-1820

Washington Irving was constantly traveling between Europe and U.S.

WHERE HE WROTE BOOKS LIKE TALES FROM THE TRAVELER AND WOFERT'S ROOT

When Washington Irving returned from his journeys

he settled down near Tarrytown and bought a house called sunnyside

EIGHT MONTHS AFTER COMPLETING ONE OF HIS MOST POPULAR WORKS (THE LIFE OF WASHINGTON)

Washington Irving died of a heart attack (at age 76)
