WATER BOTTLE DECOMPOSTION

TED TALK BY: SARAH O'SHEA

CLAIM

  • Because we haven't been recycling our water bottles, we caused pollution in the environment.

THE PROBLEM

  • There is a build up of water bottles because these bottles don't degrade for up to decades or centuries.

FACTS ABOUT WATER BOTTLE DECOMPOSTION

FACTS ABOUT WATER BOTTLE DECOMPOSTION

Katsuhiko Saido Lead scientist

  • “Plastics in daily use are generally assumed to be quite stable,” said study lead researcher Katsuhiko Saido, Ph.D. “We found that plastic in the ocean actually decomposes as it is exposed to the rain and sun and other environmental conditions, giving rise to yet another source of global contamination that will continue into the future.”

Dr. Brian Anderson

  • "Plastics contain many of the same kinds of atoms as other objects. But in plastics, these atoms are linked to one another in more complicated ways. Bacteria can't decompose plastics because they can't break the links. Slower processes can break plastics down. But these processes can take decades or even centuries to do the job".

WATER BOTTLE SICKNESSES

  • Can cause series of cancers
  • Birth defects
  • Early puberty for girls
  • Premature Labor
  • Neurological Diffculties
  • Reduced fertility in women
  • Over 96% of women in the U.S have BPA in their bodies.

WHat causes sickness and how to fix it

  • It's a chemical called (BPA) and it makes the bottles hard and clear.
  • The good news is that you can have your BPA levels measured and make lifestyle changes to lower them.

WAYS you can help

  • Stop using bottled water- use tap water
  • Bring your own reusable grocery bags with you when you go to the store
  • Use a refillable dispenser for your hand soap and dish washing liquid
  • Use a reusable container instead of sandwich bags
  • Bring your own to-go mug with you to the coffee shop
  • Use silverware instead of plactic utensils

WAYS YOU CAN HELP

  • Buy downloadable songs instead of CD's
  • RECYLE
