There are 2 types of water scarcity: Physical scarcity and Economic scarcity

Physical scarcity: Not enough/inadequate water to supply a region. Many countries and governments focus on wanting to reduce physical scarcity. The UN focuses a lot on reducing physical scarcity.

Economic Scarcity: Economic water scarcity is caused by a lack of investment in water infrastructure or insufficient human capacity to satisfy the demand of water in areas where the population cannot afford to use an adequate source of water.

EFFECTS OF WATER SCARCITY

  • Around 4,000 children under the age of five, die every day due to a lack of drinking water or proper sanitation.
  • Water is especially hard to find in sub-saharan african.

  • Women and girls in poor countries spend about 15-17 hours a week collecting water.
  • In 60 countries in the developing world, more than half of primary schools have no adequate water facilities and nearly two thirds lack adequate sanitation

Why water is important?

  • Its essential for our lives, we need it to survive
  • We also a use a lot of water for agricultural purposes. 69% of the world's freshwater withdrawals are committed to agriculture. The industrial sector accounts for 19% while only 12% of water withdrawals are destined for households and personal uses.

  • Clean freshwater is essential for human life, but 1.1 billion people lack access to water and 2.7 billion experience water scarcity at least one month a year. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may be facing water shortages. When waters run dry, people can’t get enough to drink, wash, or feed crops, and the economy may begin to suffer. In addition, inadequate sanitation, Which is a problem for 2.4 billion people, can lead to deadly diarrheal diseases, including cholera and typhoid fever, and other water related illnesses.

SOLUTIONS

  • These are the solutions that NGOs are trying to do: Educate the people, Recycling water, Advanced technology to help with water conservation, Re-revised farming techniques, Improving sewage systems, Supporting NGOs which are helping with cleaning and conserving water. There are a lot of solutions.
