WEATHERING

THE PROCESS THAT CAUSES ROCK TO DECOMPOSE EITHER CHEMICALLY OR PHYSICALLY.

PHYSICAL WEATHERING

A FORCE PHYSICALLY BREAKING DOWN A ROCK INTO SMALLER PIECES.

PLANT GROWTH

THIS ROCK HAS BEEN FORCED APART BECAUSE A PLANT STARTED GROWING IN IT.

FREEZING & THAWING

RAIN COLLECTED IN THE ROCK, EXPANDED WHEN IT FROZE, & THEN THAWED, CAUSING THE ROCK TO CRACK.

ABRASION

THIS ROCK RUBBED AGAINST OTHER ROCKS, CAUSING PARTS TO BREAK OFF.

CHEMICAL WEATHERING

A ROCK BEING CHEMICALLY BROKEN DOWN INTO SMALLER PIECES.

DISSOLUTION

DISSOLUTION IS WHEN ROCKS ARE BEING DISSOLVED BY WATER, LIKE THESE ROCKS.

ACID RAIN

ACID RAIN HAS CAUSED THIS STONE STATUE TO DECOMPOSE & BREAK DOWN QUICKLY.

OXIDATION

OXIDATION HAS CAUSED THIS ROCK TO RUST, OR TO BREAK DOWN ALL ITS LAYERS.

WEATHERING IN MINNESOTA

THESE ROCKS ARE UNDERGOING OXIDATION WEATHERING IN MINNESOTA.
