PRESENTATION OUTLINE

WEATHERING & EROSION

OXYGEN

  • Agent of chemical weathering
  • Rust is caused by oxidation

WATER

  • Most important agent of chemical weathering
  • Water weathers rock by dissolving it

ABRASION

  • The grinding away of rock by rock particles carried by water, ice, wind, or gravity
  • Wind, water, or ice can wear away exposed rock surfaces.

FREEZING & THAWING

  • Water freezes in cracks and makes them expand
  • Ice wedging, which is part of freezing and thawing, causes potholes

EROSION

  • Erosion is the process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves fragments of rock and soil.
  • One type of erosion is landslides.

THINGS THAT CAUSE EROSION:

  • Gravity
  • Running water
  • Glaciers
  • Waves
  • Wind
