Rock Slide

By Isabella Robbins

Weathering

  • The breaking down of rock at or near earth's surface

Mechanical Weathering

  • any of the various weathering processes that cause physical disintegration of exposed rock without any change in the chemical composition of the rock

Chemical Weathering

  • Occurs when chemical reactions dissolve the minerals in rocks or change them into different minerals

Deposition

  • The process by which sediments settle out of the water or wind that is carrying it, and is deposited in a new location

Erosion

  • The process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, etc.

Deflation

  • The erosion of sand, soil, etc., by the action of the win

Windbreak

  • a thing, such as a row of trees or a fence, wall, or screen, that provides protection from wind

Mudflow

  • a flowing mass of soft, wet, unconsolidated earth and fine - grained debris, made fluid by rain or melted snow and often building up great speed

Rockslide

  • the downward sliding of a relatively dry mass of earth and rock

Moraine

  • a mass of rocks and sediment carried down and deposited by a glacier, typically as ridges at its edges or extremity

Esker

  • a long ridge of gravel and other sediment, typically having a winding course, deposited by melt water from a retreating glacier or ice sheet

Outwash

  • material carried away from a glacier by melt water and deposited beyond the moraine

Contour Farming

  • the practice of tilling sloped land along lines of consistent elevation in order to conserve rain water and to reduce soil losses from surface erosion

Dunes

  • a mound or ridge of sand or other loose sediment formed by the wind especially on the sea coast or in a dessert

Soil Erosion

  • the washing away of soil by the flow of water

Overgrazing

  • graze so heavily that the vegetation is damaged and the ground becomes liable to erosion

Terracing

  • a raised, flat mound of earth with sloping sides

Slump

  • a form of mass wasting that occurs when a coherent mass of loosely consolidated materials or rock layers moves a short distance down a slope

Creep

  • the slow downward progression of rock and soil down a low grade slope

Sandstorm

  • dust storm; a storm caused by strong wind and sand or dust
