The Holy Bible says that God is Holy. That means, among other things, that God is both transcendent (far above us) and immanent (with us). In these two concepts we learn much about who God is and what He is like. This lesson is part of a multi-sessions series on the Character of God from my book "Beyond Belief" published by LifeWay Publishers, www.lifeway.com. (c) 2015. Freddy Cardoza. The Only True God

Is Praiseworthy for His Incalculable Worth

Our capacity to recognize God indicates He has revealed Himself

God's "Revelation" is "self-revealed." God has spoken.

The Bible is our primary source of Divine Revelation

Theology uses the Bible to answer the question, "What is God Like?"

Theology separates God's attributes into two types: amoral and moral

Amoral/Metaphysical Attributes

Having to do with God's "existential nature"

Metaphysical/"God's Being"

  • Pre-Existence: Eternality
  • Power: Omnipotence
  • Presence:Omnipresence
  • Knowledge: Omniscience
  • Nature: Omnibenevolence
  • Changelessness: Immutability
  • Wisdom: Inscrutability

Moral Attributes

God is Holy

Psalm 99

Holiness is God's primary attribute

He is self-governed by His Nature

Ps 99:1-3

  • 1 The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble. He is enthroned above the cherubim. Let the earth quake. 2 Yahweh [YHWH/Jehovah] is great in Zion; He is exalted above all the peoples. 3 Let them praise Your great and awe-inspiring name. He is holy.

God's Holiness is seen
in His Transcendence

God's Transcendent Holiness means He is far above us
and "set apart"

We are created in His image; He is not created in ours. God is completely separate from, above, and over all creation.

He is uncreated. He is incomparable. He is sometimes called the “Wholly Other.” That means God is absolutely of a different kind and type than anything imaginable. He exists independently and without reliance on any other beings or force.

Even more fundamentally, God is sacrosanct, which is an unusual but important word. It means God is absolutely sacred and inviolable, above criticism, incorruptible, and unassailable. That is what we mean when we say that God is holy.

God's Transcendence (vv.1-3)

  • Transcendence is God's "exalted greatness"
  • God is v1 enthroned "above" the cherubim, v2 exalted above all peoples, deserving praise v3 great name

God's Transcendence (vv.1-3)

  • God is of a different kind, "wholly other," and utterly incomparable
  • He is preeminent and supreme
  • He is sacrosanct: of absolute holiness, having character that is inviolable, sacred, incorruptible, and unassailable

Though we are like God

God is not like us
We are created in His image; He is not created in ours. God is completely separate from, above, and over all creation.

He is uncreated. He is incomparable. He is sometimes called the “Wholly Other.” That means God is absolutely of a different kind and type than anything imaginable. He exists independently and without reliance on any other beings or force.

God as Creator

  • God, the Prime Mover
  • God is a Person
  • God created other Beings
  • Only Human Beings are created in His Image (Imago Dei)
  • As Imago Dei, only Humans have a Soul (self-reflection, meaning, moral capacity, everlasting soul)

Ps 99:4-5

  • 4 The mighty King loves justice. You have established fairness; You have administered justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at His footstool. He is holy.

God's Holiness is also seen
in His Immanence (vv.4-5)

God is fully vested in our daily lives

His holiness doesn't estrange us from Him

Immanence implies being "here"

  • He cares infinitely about us and our lives. He is unique, but not aloof
  • His holiness makes Him love fairness and administer justice (v.4)
  • His "footstool" is the earth (He is here and the earth is also His abode)

Holy also means God is "with us"

  • He is "Immanuel" (Jesus)
  • God in Christ is God-Man, transcendent AND immanent (hypostatic union)
  • God 'condescends' and stoops to be intimately concerned for us and our lives
We are created in His image; He is not created in ours. God is completely separate from, above, and over all creation.

He is uncreated. He is incomparable. He is sometimes called the “Wholly Other.” That means God is absolutely of a different kind and type than anything imaginable. He exists independently and without reliance on any other beings or force.

Even more fundamentally, God is sacrosanct, which is an unusual but important word. It means God is absolutely sacred and inviolable, above criticism, incorruptible, and unassailable. That is what we mean when we say that God is holy.

God's Holiness Ensures

  • Life may not be fair, but God will settle the score
  • Justice is God creating divine order from chaos
  • God always does what is best and what is right
  • Because God is Holy, we can entrust our lives to Him without reservation

Ps 99:6-9

  • 6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests; Samuel also was among those calling on His name. They called to Yahweh and He answered them. 7 He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud; they kept His decrees and the statutes He gave them.

Ps 99:6-9

  • 8 Lord our God, You answered them. You were a forgiving God to them,an avenger of their sinful actions.
  • 9 Exalt the Lord our God; bow in worship at His holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.
