Before there was any progress in the fight for universal human rights, there was digression.

This was the first case to ever be heard by the supreme court pertaining to same-sex marriage.

From the early 2000s forward there has been much progress on the human rights front. Many of the homophobic, liberty-deterring laws and legislations began being repealed.

Bills such as DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) and the military policy "Don't Ask Don't Tell" have now been repealed. But there is still a long way to go in this fight.
