Founding

  • Delaware was founded by Peter Minuit in 1638.
  • Peter Minuit lived from 1580 -1638. He lived for 58 years.
  • The original name of the colony was the Delaware Colony
  • the reason for Founding was Trade and profits

Geography

  • the Delaware Colony was one of the middle colonies.
  • Delaware was named after the Delaware river.
  • It is Flat lowland along the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Mostly swampland with over 30,000 acres of swamp.
  • Fertile soil that was suited to farming

Economy

  • Delaware's was a trading post for plows, tools, and locks.
  • Delaware was known as a breadbasket colony since they grew lots of crops.
  • Delaware was known mostly for their wheat.
  • The wheat was made into flour and exported out to other colonies.

Religion

  • Quakers were people from Christian roots. It began in the 1650's in England.
  • Since there was no specific culture in Delaware at that time, there were Catholics, Quakers, Jews, and more.
  • Quakers had meeting together almost every year.

Climate

  • In Delaware there is the Atlantic coast of the United States.
  • It is mostly humid in Delaware.
  • In the winter there is very heavy snow.
  • Delaware is often affected by heavy snow seasonally.

Fun Facts

  • Flax and hemp farms were established in the in most middle colonies including Delaware.
  • Delaware was the first colony to be made into an official state.
  • December 7, 1787 was when Delaware became an official colonial state .
