Georgia facts

  • Founder: James Oglethorpe
  • Founded in: 1732
  • Region: Southern

Who was James Oglethorpe

  • He fought as an British soldier as well as being a member of British parliament
  • He also was a philanthropist (someone who donates a lot of money and time to the community)
  • He loved to help others and even wanted to give poor British colonists nice land in the New World

Geography

  • Hilly coastal plains
  • Lots of forest
  • Lush land for farming
  • Lots of wild animals

Economy

  • Developed plantations
  • (Tobacco, cotton, corn, and other)
  • plantations are large parts of land for farming and live stock

Religion

  • Georgia didn't welcome Roman Catholic
  • Had mostly Baptists and Anglicans
  • Baptists were a mix of Evangelicals and Protestants
  • Anglicans had similar belief to the British church (Church of England)

Reasons to come to Georgia

  • The climate made it possible to grow crops all year
  • Georgia provided a refuge for protestants and a military presence between the other colonies
