Founded in 1633, by  George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) in the Southern Colonies

George Calvert (Lord Baltimore)

  • Famous for his effort to create a refuge in America for English Catholics
  • Born 1579, in Catterick, North Yorkshire, England
  • Father was a member of landed gentry, owned small estate in Kipplin, Catterick, North Yorkshire

George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) continued!

  • 1603 he undertook work for Sir Robert Cecil, Chief Minister of Queen Elizabeth I, that requiered traveling to Europe
  • November 1604 he married Anne Mayne in Protestant ceremony, St. Peter's, Cornhill in London

George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) continued again

  • In 1613 King James I commissioned George Calvert to check out Catholics in Ireland
  • George Calvert got knighted in 1617 for his services to the king, King James I
  • In 1610 & 1611, George Calvert went on missions to Europe on behalf of King James I of England

Religion

  • No specific religion, it's a mix of, Baptists, Catholics, Anglicans, and more
  • Religious Toleration, established by the law of Maryland Assembly, April 2, 1649
  • Founding reason: religious freedom, especially for Catholics

Geography

  • Coastal Plains, Piedmont Plateau, The Blue Ridge, separated by Chesapeake Bay
  • About 250 miles long & 90 miles wide
  • 9,837 square miles of land area

Economy

  • Agriculture: tobacco, cotton, corn, vegetables, grain, fruit & livestock
  • Largest slave population grew, rice, sugar & indigo (a kind of dye)
  • Traded items not in plantation, such as: shoes, lace, thread, farm tools & dishes

  • Big Cities: Baltimore, Capital- Annapolis
  • Climate: Warm Winters, & hot Summers, Warm weather spreads disease, warmth makes it easy to grow crops and makes it good for plantations

Government

  • Government: 1775 Maryland was governed as a Proprietary Colony which means a Monarchy chooses people to run a piece of land

  • Maryland's original name was the 'Province of Maryland'
  • Maryland was the 7th of the original colonies
