BANKING

6. Banking and credit

Banking in the USA is extremely competitive and an array of services and rates can make choosing where to open an account confusing. It is often easier to maintain an overseas account, open a US based account at the same bank and transfer money back and forth overseas. It is possible to relocate successfully without opening an American account, and expats on short stays usually choose to use their overseas account.

To open a checking account, expats moving to the USA should confirm with their bank what forms of identification are required. Generally speaking, passport, immigration information, social security number and proof of address are often expected.

Credit histories can be transferred to the USA, although this can be difficult so many expats choose to make major purchases through their overseas account. Property can be bought without a US bank account.

The official currency is the US Dollar (USD). The US Dollar is broken down into 100 cents:
Notes: 1,2,5, 10, 20, 50 100 dollars
Coins: 1, 5,10, and 25 cents

The USA is both a cash and card economy although nearly everything is done by an ATM card. Expats will find both methods of payment, accepted almost everywhere. Although some of the smallest outlets may not take cards. Bank branches can be found in all major US towns and cities and ATMs are well dispersed.

• Tipping mail carriers and other home related services providers varies but a good rule is The three groups of people you should tip are the people who help you with your dependents, those who provide you personal services, and the people who help maintain your home.

Examples of people who help you with your dependents are babysitters, other child care workers, dog walkers, etc. Those who offer you personal services include your hair dresser, manicurist, personal trainer, etc. And the people who help you with your home are your housecleaner, newspaper delivery person, lawn care worker, etc. 2. Tip anyone who helps you year-round the cost of one session.

For instance, if you go to the hairdresser every month and one cut costs $100, you’ll tip her $100. If you pay your dog walker $50/week, then the year-end tip would be $50.

For people whose services you use less often, tip them less by the same amount. So, for instance, if you go to the hairdresser every three or four months, then tip $25-$30 instead (or give a gift of that value).
