Who we are

• Different areas: writing (news, sports, arts, life, opinion, features)
• Also, photography; video; web stuff; copyediting; graphics
• We have a wide range of talent here at The Cord 
• Hoping that you can help us out! 

What we can do for you

• Skills you’ll gain – writing, editing,photography, etc.
• Co-curricular record
• Lots of room to grow if you’re interested in moving up
• Looks great on a resume; establish references 
• You don’t have to become a journalist!

What it has done for us

• Alumni have gone to major news outlets
• Great if you're pursuing a masters, especially in journalism 
• Teachers, PR, communications work
• Added a lot of value to us arts students 

What you need to be involved

• Willingness to learn! You do not need to have experience 
• We provide training and mentorship. 
• We also have equipment: cameras, recorders, computers
• • You are a volunteer for the organization

Basics of news writing

• A strong lede
• Inverse pyramid
• Mix of direct quotes and paraphrasing
• Interviewing is important! 
• Be BALANCED and OBJECTIVE

Not just news

• Life, arts, feature writing 
• If you like magazines better, that's fine
• Sports -- no one cares about your thoughts on the Leafs
• Blogging 

We do more than writing

• Photography
• Videography -- our newest department
• Graphic design and art 
• Webwork, coding, 'data journalism' 
• Copy editing
