Founded Facts

  • Founded by Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret
  • It was one of the middle colonies also called the breadbasket colonies
  • Founded in 1664 when the British took it from the Dutch
  • Was the 10th colony to be founded
  • Named after the British island Jersey

Economy

  • Grew a lot of wheat which they made into bread
  • Grew grain ,corn and rice
  • Sold pork and beef
  • Manufactured iron ore
  • Shipbuilding
  • Coal indigo dye and also sold furs and cattle

  • There were mountains in the northeast
  • Lowlands from Lake Ontario on Canada border

  • New Jersey's original name was The Province of New Jersey
  • In 1676 New Jersey parted into East New Jersey and West New Jersey For 26 years they were two colonies then in 1702 they were one colony again
  • When New Jersey became two separate colonies half of New Jersey became part of New York
