Trans-Saharan trade requires travel across the Sahara to reach sub-Saharan Africa from the North African coast, Europe, or the Levant. While existing from prehistoric times, the peak of trade extended from the 8th century until the late 16th century.
Trade with the wangerans took place along a river in the southern forests.

Islam spread in Ghana slowly and spread in Mali but they did not follow of its teachings. In 1312 a new leader took over and became the first west African ruler to practice Islam devoutly.
Muslims valued learning and built many schools and centers of learning. Architecture: Mosques vs. small shrines. Homes also had new designs. Art: Calligraphy, geometric patterns, etc.
One legacy is mosques which are a huge part in life today there are over a million mosques in the world.
