PRESENTATION OUTLINE

NAMES OF THE COUNTRIES I VISITED

  • Sudan
  • Chad
  • Nigeria
  • Liberia
  • Zaire
  • Other Countries I traveled through: Benin, Burkina Faso, the island nation of Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo, Angola, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

CLIMATE AND LANDSCAPE

  • West and Central Africa features many different landscapes: Swamplands, tropical rainforests, savannas, river deltas, and dry plateaus.
  • The climates are tropical wet and tropical wet dry. There is also a little bit of steppe climate near the north of west Africa. I would definitely recommend a T-shirt and shorts. It’s Hot!

NATURAL RESOURCE

  • Nigeria is the most populated country and heavily exports oil. The rigs I saw were quite impressive.
  • The largest country in the region is Zaire. It’s main economic export is farming. It has a wealth of economic resources that they don’t use. The people love to farm.
  • Most countries in the region have mineral wealth yet to be discovered and are too poor to mine those minerals. Most use some sort of agriculture to support their economy. This is unfortunate and greatly affects the people.

IMPORTANT LANDFORMS

  • The Congo River Basin contains most of Africa’s rainforest and is the habitat for African Gorillas.
  • I also saw the Congo River which is the 2nd longest river in Africa.
  • The Gulf of Guiana is a important gulf for ports and such on the West side of Africa.
  • I also visited Mt. Cameroon which was the highest mountain in West Africa.

ACTIVITIES I ENGAGED IN

  • I played soccer with children in Nigeria.
  • I went on an expedition into the Congo to look for gorillas.
  • I also went skydiving in the Congo.
  • I explored caves in the Congo.

DIFFICULTY’S

  • The bugs were terrible in West Africa especially the sandflies. Bring bug spray!
  • The heat is another large problem. The temperatures went up to 93°. Bring summer clothes.
  • Latin American drug cartels have set up bases in parts of West Africa and so it was hard to avoid areas controlled by them.

SIGHTS TO SEE

  • Djenné, Mali: The oldest city in all of Mali. The Monday Market shows a lot of different trade opportunities.
  • Loango National Park, Gabon: Often called the last Eden this is the only place you can see gorillas, whales, and elephants in one place.
  • Bandiagara, Mali: Here you can see the cliff side homes of the Dogon. Bring some good walking shoes!
  • Ganvie, Benin: A unique African village built on a lake. The area has a very interesting culture.
