WHAT IS " WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS" REALLY ABOUT?

Another title for this story could be "The True Rewards Of Determination", because throughout the whole book, Billy and his dogs always had an unbreakable determination. On page 227, the author shows Little Ann's determination to kill the panther: " Little Ann dangled from his neck, still holding on."

I think that determination plays a big part in this story because Billy's determination helps him through many predicaments. On page 20, Billy shows that he would do anything to get a dog: " All through that summer I worked like a beaver."

On page 78, the author shows Billy's determination to cut down the tree in order to keep the pact that he made with his dogs: "'I'm going to cut you down, even if it takes me a year.'"

On page 118, Billy is determined to save Little Ann from the freezing ice: "Faster than I had ever moved in my life I went to work."

On page 128,the author shows that Billy would catch the ghost coon, no matter what: " I told him if the ghost coon made one track in the river bottoms,my dogs would get him."

I believe that determination is one of the main themes. Determination gave Billy the will to save the money for his dogs, the strength to cut down the giant sycamore tree, the courage to save Little Ann from the frozen river, and helped him win the tournament's gold cup.
