Thinking of a career in sports media? It takes more than a passion for sports to enjoy success in this competitive industry. Here are things (that you likely won't learn in school) you need to know if you want a career in sports media.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

What You Need To Know If You Want A Career In Sports Media.
by Gina Miller

Working in sports media is a blast BUT it's not nearly as glamorous as it seems.

You will do more research as a sports media professional than you ever did in school.

Working Games

  • You don't watch games.
  • You cover them.
  • There's no cheering in the press box. Ever.
  • There will be a point when covering games becomes a beating.

Relationships are important.

Your paycheck will be small at the start of your career.
Think peanuts.

If you're a woman, expect to be judged. Harshly.

You will see naked people.
You MUST be a pro about it.
People notice if you aren't.

Remain humble.
Be yourself.
Have fun.

Additional Things To Consider:

  • Internships are critical to your success.
  • Leverage your "new media" expertise.
  • You gotta network to get work.
  • Be adaptable.
  • Continue to learn.
