Wheel and Axle

Wheel

• A wheel is basically a cylinder that Rotates
• The cylinder rotates on it's axle
• Can be any rotating object

Axle

• An axle is a smaller disk that goes inside the wheel
• It attaches to the wheel at it's rotational axis
• The wheel's radius is larger than the axle's

Gear

• A gear is a type of wheel and axel
• One gear turns rotating the others the opposite way
• Modified wheel and axels

Pulley

• A pulley uses a wheel and axle to pull something up
• There is a pulley wheel and a pulley axel
• There is an effort arm and resistance arm

Steering wheel

• A more common example of a wheel and axle
• The effort arm is the bar (that the steering wheel controlls) attached to the wheel
• The resistance armis the tire pushing itself along (friction)

Wheel and axle

• Unlike a lever, it has full rotational ability
• The effort and resistance determine the ideal MA of the machine
• This is one way to continually apply force to a load
