A wheel and axle is a simple machine consisting of a wheel with an axle through the center of it where a force is transferred from one component to the other.

History

  • First documented use by Sumerians around 4000BC
  • Mostly used from transportation or pottery
  • Earliest well-dated depiction of a weel vehicle is on the Bronocice pot which is dated to be from 3636-3370 BC excavated in Southern Poland

History

  • The oldest example of a wooden wheel and its axle was found in 2002 south of Ljubljana. It is dated between 5,100 and 5,350 years old.
  • Wheel and axle was one of the six simple machine identified by Renaissance scientists drawing from Greek texts on technology.

Mechanical advantage

The main advantage of using it is that it reduces the force of friction by using a circular wheel to transfer energy.
