Where Once Poe Walked

Eternal brood the shadows on this ground,
Dreaming of centuries that have gone before;
Great elms rise solemnly by slab and mound,
Arch'd high above a hidden world of yore.
Round all the scene a light of memory plays,
And dead leaves whisper of departed days,
Longing for sight and sounds that are no more.
Lonely and sad, a spectre glides along
Aisles where of old his living footsteps fell;
No common glance discerns him, tho' his song
Peals through time with a mysterious spell:
Only the few who sorcery's secret know
Espy amidst these tombs the shade of Poe.

Lovecraft's work, although it is original in its own right, was influenced by the works of Edgar Allan Poe

“Poe has probably influenced me more than any other one person. If I have ever been able to approximate his kind of thrill, it is only because he himself paved the way by creating a whole atmosphere & method which lesser men can follow with relative ease.” (to J. Vernon Shea, 19 June 1931)

THEME STATEMENT:
Although the dead are gone, it is because of us who remember them and mark their existence that they can continue living on in the hearts and lives of those they have left behind.
