  • what is the author trying to tell us about being human, shared experiences

  • until you see the human purpose, you won't have anything to say

  • control of rhetoric (argue a point. state claim, explain it, make reference
  • control of conventions (no commas or egregious errors
  • control of structure (intro and conclusion)

  • your thoughts are self evident, must explain to reader
