Whittier College Homecoming: A History
Whittier College has been celebrating homecoming since the mid 1900's
Homecoming festivities have been gendered for decades
This tradition took off in the early 1950's when the male and female societies started competing to see who could build the best float
Which possessed all of the essential "Girl ingredients"
& STARTED AS AN ALL FEMALE COURT
the HOMECOMING COURT CONSISTED OF "HER HIGHNESS" AND PRINCESSES from the FRESHMAN, SOPHMORE, JUNIOR AND SENIOR classes
most women considered homecoming queen to be the example of femininity
When did it start?
- homecoming court for females was frequently seen up until the 1950's men started crowning the queen
- Crowned by the student body president
main focus was on football
Until the First King was crowned in 1981
Why 1981?
- The Vietnam War... 1969 Draft (ended until 1973)
- Majority of women living on campus

we still have the homecoming court competition,
we no longer have bonfires, banquets, coronation balls, or floats
INSTEAD, WE HAVE THE PARADE OF POETS WHERE EACH SPORTS TEAM CARRIES THEIR SIGN AND MARCHES AROUND THE TRACK BEFORE THE GAME AS A SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR THE FOOTBALL TEAM
this replacement shows just how the times have changed
rather than dividing the school in half by gender,
