Whittier College has been celebrating homecoming since the mid 1900's

Homecoming festivities have been gendered for decades

Including the parade of floats

This tradition took off in the early 1950's when the male and female societies started competing to see who could build the best float

Homecoming 2016

change in focus

football gAME

there is still the annual

Spirit Week

we still have the homecoming court competition,

but it is no longer a big deal.

we no longer have bonfires, banquets, coronation balls, or floats

INSTEAD, WE HAVE THE PARADE OF POETS WHERE EACH SPORTS TEAM CARRIES THEIR SIGN AND MARCHES AROUND THE TRACK BEFORE THE GAME AS A SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR THE FOOTBALL TEAM

this replacement shows just how the times have changed

rather than dividing the school in half by gender,

we now focus on unifying our community

respect and support

Whittier homecoming now focuses on

gender separation

and we have little to no
