WHOOPING COUGH (PETRUSSIS)

DEFINITION

  • A whooping cough is just a normal cough. However the person makes a whooping sound. Also, the person receives a lot more pain.
  • Once infected, the disease lasts for about 100 days.

Symptoms

  • Mild Cough
  • Runny Nose
  • Mild Fever
  • Sneezing

HOW THE WHOOPING COUGH SPREADS

  • It spreads in an airborne way.
  • It can also spread with contact e.g. If the person with the disease touches an object followed by another person touching the same one.
  • It can spread by direct contact as well e.g. A handshake

PREVENTING WHOOPING COUGH

  • Drink clean and healthy water
  • Wash your hands
  • Vaccinating yourself in time.

HISTORY

  • It first started infecting people in the 1600's
  • A vaccine was created in 1950 at the Michigan Department of Health.

HOW IT SPREADS GLOBALLY

  • Through airplanes, spreading to others who spread to even more people when they get back home.
