Adeline Virginia Woolf born on the 25th January 1882 was an English Writer and one of the foremost modernist of the 20th century

Much of her work was self-published and is seen as a major 20th century novelist and one of the foremost modernist.

She is arguably the major lyrical novelist in the English language. Her novels are highly experimental and sometimes almost dissolved.

She married her husband Leonard Woolf, a Jew and she didn't like him but then the two collaborated professionally and founded the Hogarth Press which subsequently published Virginia's novels

Virginia was a bisexual and she had an intimate and sexual affair with Vita Sackville West and they ended their relationship to become friends in the end.

Virginia and Leonard's marriage was quite on the rocks and so was George and Martha's marriage in the book as it examines the breakdown of the marriage of a middle age couple.

George and Martha have evaded the ugliness of their marriage by taking refuge in illusion. The disappointment that their life together leads to the bitterness between them.
