PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Why couldn't the North and South

Settle their differences peacefully

Reasons why

  • Slavery
  • State's rights
  • Differences in culture and economy

Slavery

  • Slavery had been banned in the North
  • Confederates kept it because they based their economy off of slave labor
  • The north thought this went against all the US was based off of(freedom)
  • Abolitionists feared that new state would be admitted as slave states
  • So Compromises were made in effort to keep the US united.

State's Rights

  • The North and South quarreled over  interpretation of the US constitution
  • Northerners wanted a loose interpretation, giving federal gov. the power
  • Southerners wanted to reserve the States' rights
  • Meaning that the states could create their own gov.

Differences in culture and Economy

  • The South's economy was based off of slave labor and plantations
  • The North's economy was built from industries and factories
  • Tariffs affected the south more than the north
  • Tariffs placed taxes  on imported goods
  • The South required a lot of imported goods for plantations

All these differences led to the Civil War
