Why did the American colonists want to be free from British rule?

what was britain doing?

  • Were exerting too much control over the colonies
  • They were in dept after the French and Indian war. 
  • They started imposing new taxes and acts.
  • Tried to make the colonists pay off their debt.

  • Colonists  felt that the new acts violated their rights
  • Colonists didn't have the consent of the governed
  • Each man had a right to life,  liberty, and property

Proclamation act 1763

  • Forbid the colonies from settling along the Appalachian Mtns 
  • It was to stabilize a proper relationship with Native Americans
  • Was created to keep colonies from causing wars with Natives 

STAMP ACT 1765

  • Imposed taxes on stamps
  • Needed for official documents

Quartering Act 1765
Required colonists to provide food and shelter for British troops

taxed glass, lead, paint,paper and tea

Tea Act 1773
allowed a monopoly of tea sales to East India Company which forced American colonists to buy tea from East India Company

Boston massacre

  • about 400 colonists surrounded a detachment of British Troops  
  • British Troops fired 
  • 5 colonists were killed
