HELPS CHOOSE A MATE

  • Women can chemically assess a mate's suitability
  • A kiss can be decipher for selecting a mate
  • sense of smell--> kissing (detect pheromones)
  • For heterosexual relationships

  • Chew up food to feed young
  • Could have evolved into kissing
  • Other cultures still continue to do this

AFFECTION

  • Builds an intimate bond over length of the relationship
  • Developed from face/nose rubbing
  • Similar to how animals groom

  • 168 cultures from around the world, only 46% of cultures kiss in the romantic sense.
  • Most still kiss children on the cheek in comfort
  • Europe: kiss on a cheek to greet
  • Kunik(Eskimo kissingwith nose): pressing nose against cheek and breathing in -intimate greeting between family and loved ones
