NATURAL DISASTERS

Why Does Hunger Exist?
Hunger is caused by many different things from wars to poverty, and oftentimes, natural disasters.

TYPES OF NATURAL DISASTERS

  • Earthquakes
  • Tsunamis
  • Floods
  • Tornadoes/Hurricanes/Typhoons
  • Wildfires
Some natural disasters that left many hungry and impoverished are earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, tornadoes/hurricanes/typhoons, and wildfires.

SOUTH EAST COAST

2005 Hurricane Katrina
- costliest natural disaster in US history
- 6th most intense Atlantic hurricane
- killed at least 1,883 people
- hit Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Cuba

- destroyed many homes and shelters
- left people homeless/with little basic necessities

JAPAN

2011 TŌHOKU EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMIS
- magnitude 9.0 undersea earthquake: triggers powerful tsunami waves that grew up to 133 ft
- at least 15,884 deaths
- 4.4 million without electricity
- 1.5 without water supply
- hit over 20 prefectures in Tōhoku alone

- destroyed many homes and took away running water and electricity

In November of 2013, the Philippines received its deadliest storm yet, Typhoon Haiyan.
- top wind speeds 145 - 195 mph
- made landfall five times in the Philippines before striking northern Vietnam as a severe storm
The typhoon not only killed at least 6,201 people but also devastated survivors. People were left homeless and without proper nutrition to sustain them.

WORLD RELIEF

Some world relief organizations and efforts working to help victims of Katrina, the Tōhoku tsunami, and Haiyan were World Relief, the American and International Red Cross, World Vision, UNICEF, the UN Reliefweb, and Project HOPE. These organizations and many others helped supply basic necessities and food to the needy victims of these devastating disasters.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP
