Why Don't teenagers sleep at night?

SOME REASONS WHY:

  • homework
  • social media
  • cafeine, stress, staying out late
  • melatonin is produced later at night
  • teens brains naturally work on later schedules

  • Biological Rhythms annual
  • Circadian Rhythms
  • 5 stages of sleep

Biological Rhythms

  • Annual cycles seasonal variations
  • Menstrual Cycle
  • 24 hour cycle (or circadian rhythm)
  • 90 minute cycle (sleep cycles)

Circadian Rhythm

  • body changes and awareness
  • It is best to study
  • take a test
  • focus better
  • meemory is stable

Sleep Stage 1:

  • between being awake 
  • light sleep
  • last between 1 to 5 minutes
  • falling asleep

Stage 2:

  • ones sleep
  • breathing and heart rate are regular
  • body temperature drops
  • become unaware of our surrondings

Stage 3 &4:

  • deepest most resorative sleep 
  • blood temperature drops
  • breathing is slower
  • energy is restored
  • hormones released, breathing slows

Stage 4:Rem sleep

  • important stage
  • provides energy to brain
  • supports daytime performance
  • brain active dreams occur
  • body is relaxed are muscles are off

Why is sleep important?

  • healthy immune systems
  • balance appetites
  • helps us no when we are full
  • helps us function better durring the day

Results of Teenagers Not Sleeping:

  • they are tired cannot function
  • melatonin is released and you fall asleep 
  • your body get signals saying your hungry
  • your hypothalamus tells you that you are hungry 
  • then you may over eat.

How to get good night sleep:

  • turn off any distractions
  • do not procrastinate homework
  • 6 am school : 9 p.m. to reach the 9-hour mark
  • teens need 8½ to 9½ hours of sleep a night.
