PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TIDAL LOCKING

OCCURS WHEN THE GRAVITATIONAL GRADIENT MAKES ONE SIDE OF AN ASTRONOMICAL BODY ALWAND S FACE ANOTHER,

(AND TO BEGIN) AN EFFECT KNOWN AS SYNCHRONOUS ROTATION. FOR EXAMPLE,

THE SAME SIDE OF THE MOON ALWAYS FACES THE EARTH!

THE GRAVITY GRADIENT IS THE SPATIAL RATE OF CHANGE OF

GRAVITATIONAL ACCELERATION.

GRAVITY GRADIOMETRY IS USED BY OIL AND MINERAL PROSPECTERS TO MEASURE THE DENSITY

OF THE SUBSURFACE, EFFECTIVELY THE RATE OF CHANGE OF ROCK PROPERTIES.
